Hiring People with a Differing Ability
We hire people with differing abilities. We focus on what people can do, not what someone cannot do. More than half our employees have a differing ability and that benefits all of us. Hiring people with differing abilities leads to better morale, better productivity, better retention, and it helps us recruit. We want to show the world what people with differing abilities can achieve.
We are a social enterprise, so our social and business missions are indivisible. We spread happiness by showing what people with differing abilities can do (more than half our employees have a differing ability), by Giving Back (we have raised $900,000 for our charity partners) and by making a personal connection with our customers. We work as a team to make these goals a reality. What we do matters.
Making This a Great Place to Work
One of our pillars is making Wahooo Market a great place to work. We have developed six components to make Wahooo Market a great place to work.
- Offer people a mission to which they can commit. We need to offer you something bigger than ourselves, something that matters, something you can be proud of, a mission that makes a difference.
- Make sure everyone knows why his or her job matters. There's no such thing as a make-work job or a “cog in the machinery” at Wahooo Market. Everyone’s job matters. Everyone has a role in pursuing our mission.
- Put people in a position to succeed. Don't ask someone to do a job they can’t do. We don’t ask John to calculate our finances, but no one gives a better tour than John. And give people the support they need, so they can do their best work.
- Pay people fairly. Wahooo Market doesn't have to out-pay every competitor in town, but people need to believe they are being paid fairly, that the pay respects them.
- Recognize the work people do. We need everyone to know that their work and effort are seen. This can be as simple as saying thank you.
- Stay out of the way and let people do their jobs. Once someone is trained, trusted, and clear on the mission, the best thing we can do is stay out of the way and let them do their job.
Together, these six things are what separate a store that's just a job from a store people are proud to work at, and at Wahooo Market, that pride is the thing worth protecting as the business grows.
